Over 4,000 years ago people began to use pieces of terracotta for decorating their muddy floors. Some centuries later, in 400 BC, the Greeks brought this “pebble art” to a new level, creating depictions of their gods. Romans and Byzantines were also very active with this kind of decoration. With the invention of little glass tiles, mosaics could be more colorful and precise.
Presently glass mosaic tiles are used mostly by interior designers. Arno Coenen however brings the ancient art of mosaic to a new level.
While pictures in mosaic were a Greek invention, photo realistic mosaics are an innovation by Coenen. Any picture you would like can be transformed in a huge mosaic for your wall, floor, bathroom, swimming pool or anywhere else you have in mind.
Arno Coenen
Arno Coenen (1972) is essentially a multimedia artist. Since the beginning of his art education the computer has been his main instrument. Coenen applies his eclectic style in many different ways. He creates video art, billboards, ceramics, inflatable sculptures, stained-glass windows, square mosaics and wall mosaics of monumental size. His work is included in a football stadium (De Kuip), court of law (Middelburg, NL), a 'Prachtwijk' (literally a 'beautiful district, but describes a deteriorated neighborhood which is being transformed, in this case ' Kanaleneiland') and the award-winning housing project Le Medi (Rotterdam, NL). Also Coenen showed his works at unexpected places such as music festivals, in restaurants and at kickboxing tournaments. The tile tableau "Home Sweet Home" was recently acquired by the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. This artwork is a striking combination of what Arno Coenen is trying to achieve with his art; a meeting of extremes.
